Roger Hall on his play The Book Club

Takapuna Library Wednesday 2 May 12noon

The play The Book Club was performed in Auckland nearly twenty years ago, and since then it has had many productions here and in Australia.

When Janice Finn wanted to direct it for Tadpole Theatre Productions at The Pumphouse Theatre, she and Roger Hall agreed that it was time that it was updated.

It would still be Deborah’s story about her joining a book club and the books they all discussed (plus her insistence on bringing a NZ writer to one of the meetings), but does anyone read Wild Swans these day?

Most of the other book choices were also out of date. So, new books have been chosen…and with those choices new responses from each of the members.

In his talk at Takapuna Library at noon on Wednesday May 2nd, Roger Hall will discuss the new selection of books, why they were chosen, and why some didn’t make the cut. In addition which couple of favourite authors can almost define a character? These, too, got changed.

In addition he will talk about the play’s production history in Australia, how Loretta Swit (Hot Lips Hoolihan) almost came to play the part in the UK even though she was American; and his being flown to New York for a read-through for a possible Broadway production.and how it turned out to be a disaster                                      Rsvp helen.woodhouse@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz  ph 09- 890-403
