Hachette lands Serena book deal
Tennis star Serena Williams sold her yet-untitled memoir to Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group USA.


Tennis great Serena Williams (AP photo) has sold her memoir to Grand Central Publishing, the company announced on Tuesday.Grand Central, a division of Hachette Book Group USA, will release the book in fall 2009.


Industry sources said the publisher paid $1.3 million for the North American rights of the as-yet untitled tome.Fresh off of her third US Open win, Ms. Williams and her agent Suzanne Gluck of the William Morris Agency pitched the book last week in meetings with publishers. Despite her long history in the spotlight and considerable off-the-court celebrity the 26-year-old top-ranked player has never put out her own book.


In 2005, Ms. Williams and older sister Venus Williams collaborated on a paperback, Serving from the Hip: 10 Rules for Living, Loving, and Winning.
Venus sold her own memoir to HarperCollins in July. Titled The Coach Matters: Life Lessons Beyond the Playing Field, it’s scheduled to be published in 2010.Publishing executives who read the proposal for Serena’s book described it as an inspirational memoir.
